Starbucks Nutrition While We're At It

Let's talk about Starbucks Nutrition while we're at it. {this is Starbucks link - click "nutrition" when you get there} ;)

Here are your Starbucks cup sizes in the above picture. Show me your Starbucks mojo - what size is the first cup on the left? Did you know it existed? It's the "Short Cup."

In my early days, meaning when I was a Starbucks Girl making my d.a.i.l.y stop at Starbucks, I would order this first cup - the Short - and a Grande.

I know. I girls gotta do what a girls got to do.

It was a short cup in the car for the short ride to the office. Then I was prepared to face the world with my Grande by my side.
Of course, now that I am a Starbucks Mama, we order the Short cup of apple cider or hot warm chocolate for the Buck-A-Roos. Now I focus more on the Starbucks Nutrition. My nutrition takes a lot more effort now days than when I was a Starbucks Girl, climbing mountains or running after work. Now when I stop in for a favorite I always consider the size. Because there is an enormous difference between a Short and a Venti. Check your Starbucks Nutrition and chose wisely or at least know when you're indulging!

Starbucks Locator In Your Neighborhood

Starbucks Locator is a great little tool for all of us who l.o.v.e Starbucks coffee. In this little link, you can find your closest Starbucks in a flash. And that is work the price of say another Latte. I would much rather spend my money on a Latte than a gallon of gasoline. Just yesterday the Buck-A-Roos and I were heading to 'our local Starbucks' and voila we ended up driving in the opposite direction in pursuit of our breakfast fare. It didn't occur to me until my husband said, "Any reason, you drove across town." "Oh, right, I forgot about that Starbucks." You see our situation is having a lot of choices. Whatever your needs. Store Locator can get you there quickly. So check it out and go to your neighborhood Starbucks when you're in any neighborhood.

Once there I had a Skinny Hazelnut Latte 180. Starbucks is good even if I did drive across town and forgot to use Starbucks Locator Have you tried it?

Starbucks Coffee Mama Blogger Skipping The Gasoline Pump

Starbucks Coffee Mama Blogger skipping the gasoline pump because my Grande Verona Bold with Room is soooo worth it. Lucky for me Starbucks is my neighborhood and that extra gasoline is not worth it.

How far do you walk, bike, drive to your Starbucks? And while I am at it, kudos to Starbucks, Howard Schultz and friends for keeping my cup of daily brew the same price every cup, every day while on the contrary gasoline is rising every gallon, every day. Metaphorically speaking.

Starbucks Gold Coast In Bed

Saturday morning sleeping in complete with Starbucks in bed...Starbucks Gold Coast that is. We've already celebrated my birthday and Mother's Day so maybe Mountain Man is getting in the habit of spoiling Carolina Mama. :) Sounds good to me. He and the StarBuck-A-Roos went for a little doughnuts and milk and the coveted coffee,Gold Coast for mama.

Then this afternoon after a full day, I resisted the craving for a Sweet Tea. And had an extra water. Until tomorrow... that's the Starbucks Report.

Starbucks Returning To A Bolder Coffee

the buzz is that Starbucks is returning to its bolder coffee offerings. Though Pike Place is a delightful and mild blend, Starbucks Mama is happy to see some of the old faithfuls coming back at any time day or night. So if I pop in a Starbuck ready for that bold taste the company grew its name upon, I don't have to check my watch to make sure I have not missed it. Here it is from Reuters:

Thu Jun 19, 2008 9:38pm EDT
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is planning to add back bolder varieties of brewed coffee at some locations after replacing them with a smoother roast this spring, according to story in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The Journal said the coffee company was responding to customer feedback.

A Starbucks spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

Starbucks Wi-Fi Help by Starbucks Mama

Starbucks Wi-Fi offer is too good to get bogged down with say technology. :) Here's a little Starbucks Mama tip from me and the Buck-A-Roos. Yesterday, we were in Starbucks waiting for my Extra Sweet Tea when drama set in - I could not reach Wi-Fi. Now that's just a problem. Technology at my fingertips and I did'nt even have my drink to sip yet. Well a lovely Barista stepped in right before I slipped my iTouch into the trashcan....

Here is the Tip of the Day: My friendly Barista explained that when you are turning on your iTouch or iPhone at your local Starbucks, before you actually touch say, "Stocks" or "Weather" icons, you must first start with "Safari" and chose the Starbucks Wi-Fi carrier. Makes perfect sense to me. Of course, I didn't think of it. And even though folks are balking about the free internet, Howard Schultz and his people have good reason for this. Imagine everyone within a "Wi-Fi" range of Starbucks ending up on line even when they were just popping in for their favorite drink of the day. :)

Enjoy your cup, every day, and your Wi-Fi too. Let me know how it works for you!

It's Official, Starbucks Won't Shorten Your life

It's official - Starbucks coffee won't kill you and it may even reduce your risk of heart disease. Check it out below on your way over for another Grande....

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Long-term coffee drinking does not appear to increase a person's risk of early death and may cut a person's chances of dying from heart disease, according to a study published on Monday.

Previous studies have given a mixed picture of health effects from coffee, finding a variety of benefits and some drawbacks from the popular drink. The new study looked at people who drank caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee.

Researchers led by Esther Lopez-Garcia of Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain followed 84,214 U.S. women from 1980 to 2004 and 41,736 U.S. men from 1986 to 2004.

They found that regular coffee drinking -- up to six cups a day -- was not associated with increased deaths among the study's middle-aged participants. In fact, the coffee drinkers, particularly the women, experienced a small decline in death rates from heart disease.

The study found no association between coffee consumption and cancer deaths.

"Our study indicates that coffee consumption does not have a detrimental effect," Lopez-Garcia, whose research appears in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, said in a telephone interview. "It seems like long-term coffee consumption may have some beneficial effects."

There has been a debate among scientists about the health effects of drinking coffee, which typically contains the stimulant caffeine and a number of other important compounds.

The people who took part in the research completed questionnaires on how frequently they drank coffee, other diet habits, smoking and medical conditions. The researchers then studied the mortality risk over the period of the study among people with different coffee-drinking habits.

The study found that women who reported drinking two to three cups of caffeinated coffee per day had a 25 percent lower risk of death from heart disease than women who did not drink coffee. The researchers saw a smaller decreased risk for men but it was not statistically significant.

Drinking decaffeinated coffee was associated with a small reduction in overall mortality risk, the researchers said.

The people in the study had no history of cardiovascular disease or cancer when they entered it. The women were nurses and the men doctors, dentists and other health professionals.

Some studies have indicated coffee is a great source of antioxidants, substances that may protect against the effects of molecules called free radicals that can damage cells and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other ailments.

Recent studies have offered a mixed picture on the health effects of coffee.

A study that came out in January found that pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day had twice the risk of miscarriage as those who avoid caffeine. Another study appearing in January found that drinking caffeinated coffee lowered a woman's risk of ovarian cancer.

Starbucks Employee Killed In South Philadelphia

Starbucks employee killed within a block of his home. Condolences go out to this young man who was planning to teach children in this inner city.

Aspiring Teacher Killed In South Phila. Shooting
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Police are reviewing surveillance video in hopes of identifying a suspect in the death of an aspiring teacher in South Philadelphia early Sunday morning.

Police said 23-year-old Beau Reinhold Zabel was shot just one block from his home during an apparent attempted robbery on Ellsworth Street just after 1:00 a.m.

Zabel was walking home from his job at a Starbucks on 4th and South Streets when the shooting occurred. Authorities said he was struck in the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors told CBS 3 that they heard the gunshot, but mistook the noise for a faulty generator in the area.

The young victim had recently moved to Philadelphia from Austin, Minnesota with the intention of teaching high school math at a city public school in the fall. He had been selected for a Fellowship program and was set to go to Drexel University for graduate school.

Police said Zabel's wallet, with money and credit cards, as well as his backpack were untouched following the shooting.

"One pocket was turned out and sometimes, in these cases when a shooting takes place, sometimes its anticipated, sometimes its not anticipated, it's not unusual to have a person panic and not spend a lot of time there," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

Police are planning to discuss further details during an afternoon news conference.

No arrests have been made in the deadly incident. If you have any information, contact Philadelphia Police.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz Remains Strong

Starbucks CEO's vision remains strong despite economy
By Jerry Hirsch
LOS ANGELES TIMES
Sunday, June 8, 2008

LOS ANGELES -- Back in 1987, when coffee entrepreneur Howard Schultz and a group of Seattle investors purchased Starbucks, the chain had just 11 stores. Now, it has more than 16,000 spread across 44 countries.
Schultz, Starbucks' chief executive, is credited with sparking that tremendous growth in the chain, and in the process created the mass market gourmet coffee business in the United States. Now, there's either a Starbucks or a competitor in nearly every shopping mall or strip center.

On Wednesday, the management school handed Schultz its inaugural John Wooden Global Leadership Award, which will be given annually to a business leader who like Wooden, the legendary basketball coach, exhibits exemplary leadership.

Through his strength of personality and vision for the business, Schultz has had "a disproportionate impact on the growth" of Starbucks, said Judy Olian, dean of the University of California Los Angeles' Anderson School of Management.

story continues below

The award for Schultz, however, comes at a time when the coffee business isn't percolating as well as it once did. Starbucks logged its first decline in profits and is seeing fewer customers in its stores. The company's stock has plunged 37 percent over the past year to close at $18.33 on Thursday.
After the last eight years as chairman, Schultz, 54, started a second stint as CEO in January, charged with reigniting growth at the business.

Schultz spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the challenges Starbucks faces and the future of the company.

Q: What do you say to these family budget advisers who suggest that the best way to save money to pay for higher gas and food prices may be to cut out that latte, that daily trip to Starbucks?

A: We have to be ultrasensitive to providing value for our customers. And 50 million customers a week are coming through Starbucks stores.

We have to innovate and provide more value to the customer, but the customer comes into Starbucks not only for coffee, but the sense of community, the sense of humanity in our stores. We really have become this third place between home and work. We have managed through different downturns in the economy before, and we will again.

Q: This year, you had your first decline in profits. Why?

A: For 15-plus years we have led a pretty charmed life.

For the first time in our history ... we have less traffic in our stores this year than we did last year. The frequency of visits is being directly linked to the consumer not having as much disposable income as they did in years past. If you talk to the economists -- people much smarter than me -- they are saying that the next six to 12 months could be worse than the last six to 12 months.

Across the board, consumers have less money than they had before, they are quite concerned, consumer confidence is down and as a result of that, we have to be better than we were before to capture that market and to satisfy the customer.

Q: The question everybody asks about Starbucks is why are there so many?

A: The strategy for growth was based on demand.

When we went public in 1992 with under 25 stores, the more stores we opened, the more successful we became. Many of our stores got so busy that we started opening up stores nearby. It wasn't through any research or analysis or any scientific model. We just thought the market would support more stores in an area and as a result of that, we began to open up more stores. But we never imagined that it would become as big as it became.

Q: Tell us ways you are demonstrating to the customer new value, possibly new initiatives, new products.

A: There's more innovation coming at Starbucks over the next six to 12 months than we've had in the last five years.

In July, we will introduce a fantastic new summer product in Los Angeles. ... We found a fantastic new cold beverage platform in Italy and as a result of that, we are bringing it to the market. It is a product that is both indulgent and refreshing. We are quite excited about it. It is steeped in Italian heritage. I can't tell you more than that.

Q: In the coffee business, everyone is gunning for you. How do you defend your turf?

A: The size of the market is much much larger than people have initially realized. Despite how big Starbucks has become, we only have 8 percent of the total U.S. coffee market in terms of cups that are consumed. There is a big market out there and that's why you see other players trying to capture it.

It is harder to maintain leadership in many ways than to become the leader.

One of the things we have tried to do over a long period of time is really build a company that has a conscience, that achieves a balance between profitability and a level of benevolence. People sometimes miss that because the headline is so often the ubiquity of the company, the growth of the company. But we have done things that no other company has done before in the way we have tried to build the business. . . . offering equity in the form of stock options and comprehensive health care for part-time workers.

It's hard when you get big to do these things. And most companies in America that have gotten big have not stayed true or authentic. So there is a level of cynicism that some people may have. But the truth of the matter is that the company is sitting on a very solid foundation.

Q: Might the world run out of quality beans? How do you keep the supply going?

A: For Starbucks there will be no shortage of the highest quality Arabica beans. I suspect that for some others, there could potentially be a problem, not in the near term, but over time.

One area of interest is Vietnam. Vietnam is starting to grow a tremendous amount of coffee. It is mostly Robusta today, which is low quality. But I suspect over time, they will raise the level of quality in that country and we're intrigued with that and have visited Vietnam and are looking at it.

But the short answer is Starbucks has secured long-term supply for the highest quality coffee in the world for many many years to come.

Go here to see the story.

Freeloaders overload new Starbucks Wi-Fi
by Lysa
Thursday June 05, 2008, 1:52 PM

starbucks.com
Everybody loves free stuff. Free Wi-Fi is no exception, and places that offer wireless internet connections, like Starbucks, are nearly always packed with caffeine junkies hunched over their laptops.

Well, Starbucks has partnered with AT&T and rolled out a new free Wi-Fi system Tuesday - though they had a few first-day snafus.

To access Starbuck's wireless, you have to buy a minimum $5 reloadable Starbucks Card, register online for the Starbucks Rewards Card program and use the card at least once a month.

All that and you get two consecutive hours of free wireless--meaning you can't save minutes for later--but you do get a voucher for a free drink.

This might seem like a lot of trouble for two hours on the net, but apparently there were so many people trying to register for the rewards program Tuesday that the site crashed and everyone attempting to access the site got error messages.

Here's one Minnesota blogger's account of the "debacle," but has anyone in Hoboken had any wireless woes?

Starbuck's Question: What is the general start of pay at Starbucks coffee?

Question? What is the general start of pay at Starbucks coffee?
Also, what kinds of benefits/perks/freebies do they offer/ Do they still split tips among the crew? Thanks!

Answer: $7.00 hour but great benefits and some tips! Yes they do still split the tips.. Great company but the starting pay is a little low.

Starbucks Not Accepting Cash?

Wow! I have heard it all Starbucks in Korea is using a cashless payment system. I'm not sure if that is a good move, since Starbucks needs cash like the rest of us.

riday, 6 June 2008
Starbucks Waves Away Cash Transaction, Deploys Contactless Payment

Joining the growing list of merchants accepting Visa contactless payment in Korea, Starbucks has announced that cash transactions will soon be considered an archaic form of payment and customers can instead pay for their purchases with a wave of their Visa payWave-enabled card or mobile phone.

Without the need to hand over their card or sign a receipt, consumers who use Visa payWave can enjoy the convenience of faster payment.

Compared with the average transaction time of 12 to 14 seconds for standard cash transactions1, a Visa payWave transaction takes as little as four to six seconds.

Cardholders will be able to make purchases of less than KRW30, 000 by simply waving their card or mobile phone in front of a point-of-sale terminal.
"Both Visa and Starbucks care about the customer experience. Visa payWave’s contactless payment technology makes it that much faster for our cardholders to get past the cashier. They just wave and go. Technology is meant to better our lives and the less time customers spend in queues, the more time they have to enjoy their cup of coffee,” Kim Young Chong, South Korea country manager for Visa Korea said.

Visa payWave card builds on the existing global EMV smart card standard that is currently being adopted by issuers and acquirers around the world and in Asia Pacific. Payments are made via Radio Frequency (RF), much like the ‘tap and go’ cards that many commuters are already familiar with.

There is an antenna – a thin copper wire inside the Visa PayWave-enabled card – that transfers payment information quickly and securely through the RF signal to a reader connected to the merchant’s point-of-sale terminal.

By simply holding a Visa payWave-enabled card at a close range of 4 cm from the reader, the card will be detected and the transaction made.

According to Starbucks Korea, this new innovative payment service will allow them to continue to provide a convenient experience that all their customers can enjoy.

Visa payWave-enabled cards, which bear the contactless ripple symbol on the front of the card, are available through 12 major credit card issuers including Shinhan, Samsung, Hyundai, BC, Lotte and are accepted at various merchant locations including CGV, Homeplus, Primus, 7-Eleven, Lotte World, Red Mango, Michaa, Kyobo Books and SK gas stations.

Starbuck's Lays Off 100 Employees. Wow! The recession is really hitting hard for 100 faithful Starbuck's employees. Let's hope this turns around for them and for Starbucks.

Starbucks World's Most Ethical Company - Of Course

Starbucks Mama is always happy to report Starbucks goodness. Well, today is really a great thing. Ethics as they are seemingly getting lost, Starbucks brings them back to the forefront. Thank you Mr. Schultz and Friends. I'll toast a Verona with Room in the am.

Starbucks Reaffirms Commitment to Ethical Sourcing, Environmental Leadership and
Community Investment Company named to “World’s Most Ethical Companies” list by Ethisphere Magazine

As part of its continued commitment to transform its business, Starbucks Coffee Company (Nasdaq: SBUX) today announced that it is realigning its Corporate Social Responsibility department to be even more effective in its ethical sourcing, environmental leadership and community investment efforts.

Global Responsibility, formerly known as Corporate Social Responsibility, has restructured its organization to reallocate its resources to the field to be closer to the customer; create more capacity for its already robust responsibility efforts; and enable Starbucks to link its business priorities to the needs and values of the global community and environment.

“We are proud of our strong record of being responsible to our partners (employees), the communities, coffee farmers and environment,” said Martin Coles, chief operating officer of Starbucks Coffee Company. “This team will be focused on ensuring that our customers’ values are expressed in every aspect of our work.”

The Global Responsibility team will primarily focus on ethical sourcing, environmental impact and community investment efforts. In addition to this team, a network of Global Responsibility partners will be integrated within each business unit and department to help set strategy and goals within each area to ensure customers’ values are represented in every aspect of the company’s work. Regional Responsibility partners will also be located within each market to help regionalize implementation.

Fortuitously, this key leadership move was announced on the heels of the company being named to Ethisphere’s second-annual World’s Most Ethical Companies list revealed at the Ethisphere and Forbes joint-conference, “Driving Profit through Ethical Leadership,” held on June 3.

Ethisphere is a think-tank dedicated to the research and promotion of profitable best practices in global governance, business ethics, compliance and corporate responsibility. The extensive research process included reviewing over 10,000 of the world’s leading companies on six continents.

Starbucks Wi-Fi Free to the Faithful

Starbucks Mama knows you've heard it all over the world wide web. I just have to confirm the greatness of the Free Wi-Fi connections. Nice! I personally can't wait. Here's what ran in the WashingtonPost about it. Just so you know.

Starbucks Turns On Free Wi-Fi For Everyone (Purchase Necessary)

Good news for anyone in need of a quick internet fix: Starbucks is turning on free Wi-Fi today, courtesy of its partner AT&T ( NYSE: T). The deal, according to USA Today: Users will get two hours of free internet usage when they purchase a $5 reloadable Starbucks Card and register for the Starbucks Rewards Card program. Starbucks' relationship with AT&T was first announced in February, and the two sides of slowly rolled out the program since then, with AT&T users getting first crack at it in April.

Two hours isn't enough time to make Starbucks your office for the afternoon, but it'll be helpful for those times when you just have to get a blog post up right then. And if you need more time online, then you can spend some of that two hours searching for free Wi-Fi hotspots in your area.

Tricia adds: Of course, T-Mobile's Wi-Fi service (which is not free) will continue to co-exist in Starbucks with AT&T for some time. In the case of offering two hours of free Wi-Fi, it will be interesting to see if there are more laptop couch surfers at Starbucks than even before. If so, that might even create the opposite affect from what they were looking for?it may drive people away...there's nothing more annoying when your battery is dead and all the outlets are taken, or you keep getting bumped off due to network congestion. That might be fine for the casual surfer, but for the business user, paying a premium for a quality service was a small price.

Starbucks Pushes Custom Card Perks

Starbucks new rewards program pushes perks
By: David Sterrett June 02, 2008
(Crain’s) — Starbucks Corp. plans to launch its first rewards program Tuesday, giving customers a free drink, as well as complimentary coffee refills and syrup or milk customizations.

Anyone who registers a gift card online at www.starbucks.com/card will join the rewards program and receive a free drink. The benefits also include a free tall beverage with any purchase of one pound of whole bean coffee and free coffee refills during a store visit. Customers with the card will also receive complimentary in-store Wi-Fi in the next couple of months.

The program is part of the recent wave of changes implemented by Howard Schultz, the company founder who returned as CEO in January to revive the struggling coffee chain.

Seattle-based Starbucks is facing increased competition from rivals such as McDonald’s Corp., which this year began offering specialty coffee drinks. The number of customers visiting Starbucks’ 11,000 U.S. locations has declined the last three quarters.
