Argentina is joining the list of the more than three dozen countries with a Starbucks, the company said Thursday.

Starbucks Coffee Co. (Nasdaq: SBUX), the Seattle giant, says it will open its first coffee shop in the country on May 30. Alsea, the company that operates Starbucks shops in Latin American countries including Chile and Mexico, also will operate Starbucks' Argentine stores.

The first Argentine Starbucks will be in the capital, Buenos Aires.

Last month, Starbucks said it plans to accelerate its international store openings and open "significantly fewer" stores in the U.S than it had planned. Revenue growth will be greater in the next few years outside of the U.S., officials said.

"Starbucks is humbled and honored to be welcomed into Argentina, a country with a rich coffeehouse culture," Buck Hendrix, president of Starbucks Coffee Latin America, said in a statement. "We are excited about becoming a part of this great tradition and contributing to its prosperity."

Starbucks operates more than 50 coffee shops in the Triangle.

Speak To Me Mr. Schultz - Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz Taps B School Students

CEO of Starbucks speaks to business students
In lecture to Anderson School, Howard Schultz offers insight into innovation, hard work

The year was 1983 when a young businessman named Howard Schultz sat in an Italian coffee shop and was fascinated with what he saw.

Unlike in America, where customers came to a coffee shop to buy coffee, Italians came for the experience. It was their home away from home, a place where they could relax, converse or even get a little work done. Impressed, Schultz decided to try to bring this experience back to America, where he served as the director of marketing for a small coffee company named Starbucks.

Though Schultz wouldn’t be able to fully implement his ideas until he bought out Starbucks in 1987, the company thrived immediately. What started out as a four-store chain in Seattle expanded to become a coffee giant whose arms extend throughout the world.

Business students were treated to this story and loads of others during an event with Schultz on Wednesday.

Schultz, who serves as chief executive and chairman of Starbucks, received a warm welcome from an enthusiastic crowd when he was introduced.

“I can’t tell you how truly honored I am to be speaking with you today,” he said.

During the hour-long speaking event, which featured a lecture and a question-and-answer session, Schultz discussed his experiences and his rise to prominence.

Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., Schultz grew up in a subsidized public housing project. As the first of his family to graduate from college, he learned that hard work and perseverance were the quickest ways to get to the top.

“Success is not an entitlement. You have to earn it,” he said.

Judy Olian, dean of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, said during her introduction that Schultz was the first to turn coffee into an experience.

“Building a company with soul was his main goal. He was focused on re-energizing the company,” she said.

Al Osborne, senior associate dean at Anderson, said Schultz was a quintessential entrepreneur who understood the importance of thinking outside the box.

This creative thinking extended to both employees as well as consumers, since Starbucks was one of the first companies to offer comprehensive health care coverage.

“If you exceed the expectations of the employees, they will exceed the expectations of the customers,” Schultz said.

Schultz resigned as CEO in 2000 but was compelled to come back in January 2008 after the company experienced losses.

Schultz attributed a source of these losses to what he believes is a sliding economy.

There are many symptoms that show the economy is not doing well, he said.

“Mall traffic is down 10 and a half percent. One in 10 homes ends in foreclosure. (And) companies have lost an unbelievable amount of trust over the years (with consumers),” he said.

Despite these economic setbacks, Schultz said he believes Starbucks will pull through because it will stay true to what it was founded upon: excellent service and strong values.

“Work for a company that has values you’re proud of, and never give up. You can’t let anyone, including your mother and father, tell you that your dreams won’t come true,” he said.

Starbucks Scores Top Customer Satisfaction Rating in American Customer Satisfaction Index

Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX) scored the top rating for customer satisfaction among the U.S. largest Limited Service Restaurant chains in the 2008 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) released today.

“I’m so proud of our dedicated partners (employees) who work hard every day to deliver the unique Starbucks Experience,” said Howard Schultz, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks Coffee Company. “The top ACSI rating underscores the relentless focus we have on our customers and our brand promise to deliver on their expectations.”

Starbucks is the only specialty coffee retailer in the ACSI Limited Service Restaurants industry and has consistently received top ratings; tying Wendy’s last year (2007) and second only to Papa John’s in 2006. A complete list of measured companies and scores may be viewed at www.theacsi.org.

Produced by the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, in partnership with the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and CFI Group, the American Customer Satisfaction Index is a national economic indicator of customer evaluations of the quality of products and services available to household consumers in the United States.

My Starbucks My Cafe du Monde

At Cafe du Monde read: "Coffee first came to North America by way of New Orleans back in the mid-1700s...The Acadians from Nova Scotia brought this taste and many other french customs (heritage) to Louisiana."
Starbucks Mama has always appreciated Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. You can imagine my thrill when he returned to the helm. :) I've always known that Mr. Schultz is heading in the right direction. Enter my sheer delight and overwhelming joy that Mr. Schultz has has chosen my native New Orleans as the host for the Starbucks Leadership Conference this October.

Honestly, Cafe du Monde and Starbucks are two different worlds and yet their success is universal. They both have the great fans loyal followings, they both have timeless success and they both are all over the world. So it behoves Starbucks powerhouse to take it to the pioneers to rejuvenate in October.

Above you'll see the LSU Tigers dancing in their element right at Cafe du Monde this past February. The tourists were in awe. See the couple with their camera out. And they didn't' even ask... well, come to think of it I haven't asked them to be in the background here. So fair game. ;)

At any rate, I think it is the most exciting thing in Starbucks news that they are heading down to New Orleans where it all began for the USA. Starbucks and Cafe du Monde My two favorite people together at last.

I love my Starbucks. Now, did you see this?! Since this Starbucks Mama has three custom cards, because they're just so cute, I was thrilled to see my new benefits of the card. My personal favorite is to add Hazelnut Syrup to my House Blend. Starbucks is good! Extra refills are nice when lingering with a friend. So go get yours and let me know what you created.

Mine ... Starbucks Mama and Her Buck-A-Roos! Every Barista loves it as much as I do. And the Buck-A-Roos, they use it quite often.

Check this out! Starbucks iTunes are back!  Lots of us had a blast with these in December.  Now, they're back - I picked up this weeks.  This week's tune is Adele "Chasing Pavements."  In fact, here's my card pictured above just for your viewing.

It's fun to get exposure to new songs right along with my regular morning coffee. Last night, I enjoyed my Wild Passion Tazo Sweeteened Iced Tea after a nice walk.  Hit the spot!  Today, it was back to Pike Place w/Room before a busy day volunteering at school wtih the Buck-A-Roos.

Remember to get your Starbucks iTunes tune today.

Good Reading and Top Pot Doughnuts

Since good reading and Starbucks go hand in hand. Grab a Pike Place, a Top Pot Doughnut and Heather B. Armstrong's new book, "Things I Learned About My Dad (in Therapy)" - I just love that - and enjoy the ride.

You know one of the Buck-A-Roos, home from school sick, just had to have his second breakfast, a Top Pot Doughnut and Organic Apple Juice. My Starbucks Pike Place made it all fine.
